Popovich took off the 198586 season at Pomona-Pitzer to become a volunteer assistant at Kansas, where he could study directly under Brown. Following a disappointing start to the 1996-97 season, Popovich decided to let head coach Bob Hill go and assumed those duties himself. The information about his parents' occupation at the time of his birth is still under review. In 1979, Popovich was named the head coach of the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, the joint men's basketball team of Pomona College and Pitzer College in Claremont, California. He first joined the Spurs in 1988 as the assistant coach under Larry Brown before leaving in 1992 to serve in the same capacity with the Golden State Warriors.
